Watch winder guide
A watch winder gently rotates an automatic watch so that its winding mechanism can replenish the power reserve. It is a convenience for some collections, not an essential accessory for every watch.
Does your watch need one?
Winders are intended for compatible automatic mechanical watches. They do not wind a manual-wind-only movement or recharge a conventional quartz battery. A watch worn regularly may not need a winder at all.
Check direction and turns per day
Automatic movements can require clockwise, counter-clockwise or bidirectional rotation. Their recommended turns per day, often called TPD, vary. Check your watch manufacturer’s instructions and compare them with the winder’s actual programmes before ordering.
Consider your routine
A winder can be convenient when you alternate between automatic watches and want to reduce the need to reset them. Letting a watch stop is also a valid storage choice; follow its manufacturer’s care guidance.
Look beyond capacity
Check cushion fit, clearance for the case and bracelet, the available rotation modes and the power supply. If the winder will sit in a bedroom, ask about operating noise; do not assume every motor is silent.
Choose the correct power supply
Confirm UK plug compatibility and the input voltage before use. Follow the supplied instructions and do not substitute a power adaptor with different specifications.
